 The End Of The Plug-In Grant For Cars.

The government ended the plug-in car grant scheme for new electric car orders on June 14, 2022. The grant was a £1,500 subsidy for eligible electric and plug-in hybrid cars, but the government stated the market had matured and future funding would shift to expanding the charging infrastructure and providing grants for other vehicles like taxis and vans.

Grant ended: The scheme closed to new orders on June 14, 2022.

Reason for closure: The government said the scheme had successfully helped the market mature and supported the sale of nearly half a million electric cars.

Shift in focus: Funds are now being redirected to support the expansion of public charging infrastructure and other plug-in grants for vehicles like taxis, motorcycles, vans, and wheelchair-accessible vehicles.

Eligible vehicles: While the grant no longer applies to new car orders, it may still be available for certain types of low-emission vehicles like vans, and some previous grants are being honored for vehicles already on order.

**UPDATES** : As of late October 2025, there were approximately 86,798 public electric vehicle (EV) charging points across the UK, located in 44,142 different locations. The total number of charging devices has grown significantly, with a 22% increase since October 2024.

NEW RULES  | Transporting goods to or through Europe 

MOT Checklist

Prepare for new rules for transporting goods to or through Europe using cars and trailers, vans and HGVs from 2022. There will be new rules for transporting goods to or through Europe from 2022. The rules are part of the UK’s deal with the EU  (The Trade and Cooperation Agreement).

The new rules will effect you If you transport goods using:

  • Cars and trailers
  • Vans or other light goods vehicles (for example, if you run a European courier service)
  • Heavy goods vehicles (HGVs)

The new rules mean that you might need:

  • To register some journeys within Europe on an online service from 2 February 2022
  • A vehicle operator licence if you use vans or car and trailers to transport goods to or through Europe from 21 May 2022.

Starting A Business After Redundancy..

Steven Lavinaro and good friend and work colleague Anthony Curtis, set up Rumney Automotive Centre Ltd, at Unit 5 Wentloog Buildings, Rumney in 2014. After being made redundant, although both had offers of new jobs,  they believed with the economy on the up, it was the right time to start up a garage, and have a MOT test centre of their own!

Securing sprawling units in Rumney Cardiff,  with ample free parking for customers, suppliers and staff,  it was ideal building  for the new MOT Test Station.  Both  the Class 4 and the Class 7 MOT testing could be offered. The large premises allowing for a range of garage services to be offered, from an MOT Test Station to tyre changing and, every sort of mechanical work and diagnostics.

Over the years the company  have taken on staff, expanded services,  in addition to carrying out a  number of  refurbishments to the premises. The company successfully became a MOT Test Station for Class 4 & 7 .

The company has gone from strength to strength since setting up in 2014, now providing a range of garage services to  hundreds of customers, while still retaining a personal touch, with Staff on first name terms with many of Rumney Automotive  customers.  Staff are also very active on Facebook managing queries, and bookings from RumneyAutomotive 2,500+ followers.

MOT Test Centre| Legal Requirements 

There were a number of legal requirements which had to met to set up a MOT test station; from  finding and securing suitable premises; having approved MOT equipment; having an authorised examiner (AE) status; an MOT Manager to run the test centre; having a Nominated Tester to carry out the tests.

MOT Changes Increase Risk of Failure

MOT  | Biggest Overhaul For 10 Years

The MOT test recently had its biggest overhaul for 20 years. It now requires 20 extra checks to various vehicle components including airbags, tyre pressure  monitoring system, catalytic converter and electronic stability control (ESC). For the first time the speedometer will be checked.

The new rules, which officially came into force in March 2013 brings the UK in line with EU regulations. The new checks have been included in MoTs since the start of 2012 but on an advisory-only basis.

MOT OverhaulA typical modern car has 40 or more computers and a level of technical sophistication a world away from that seen in the early 1990s when the MOT test last underwent a major revision. These changes are important and help bring the MOT test in line with 21st century car technology.

The changes could lead to  many motorists facing increased costs to comply with the new rules. Other key changes include testing whether an array of dashboard lights are working properly, including seat belts, brake fluid and headlights.

MOT OverhaulCar seats must be able to move forward and backwards, to ensure that drivers can reach the pedals. The electric motor fitted to many seats in modern cars will also be checked separately. Car doors will have to open and close properly. The warning light, which warns that they have not been fully shut, will also be checked. Other additional items subject to the tougher testing regime include airbags, electronic stability controls, the speedometer and the catalytic converter.

250,000 | New Cars Failed their First MOT Check

MOT OverhaulAuto Express  reported that out of the 70 million MOT records checked by TootCompare.com, between 1 January and 9 August, more than 250,000 new cars had failed their first check. TootCompare looked at vehicles registered in 2010 and tested this year. The data related to 1.22 million MOTs of cars (motorbikes and vans were stripped out where possible). From the study results the average mileage of a car taking its first MOT was 30,177.

MOT OverhaulThisIsMoney.co.uk went further and published  the 10 big winners and the biggest losers from the TootCompare.com findings. Reporting that around 81% of new cars pass their first MOT, having been on the road for three years.  But the best MoT pass record  according to  The Money Expert Top charts  went to the Toyota IQ with a pass rate of 92%.
